Illustration Friday

Welcome
Al was upset when his new wife Peggy did not receive the welcome into the family he thought she deserved.

I downloaded a free trial of Corel Painter and decided to try it out for Illustration Friday this week. I'm still getting used to the program; however, using it on the Modbook is pretty awesome. I've been working in Adobe Illustrator for so long now, it's refreshing to use a program that simulates traditional media.

I was planning on adding much more to this illustration, especially the alien family and their reactions to the wife. Eventually, I'll get back to it, some day, hopefully.

Cookbook Contest

The company I work for donates a great amount of money to the Light the Night Lukiemia and Lymphoma foundation. We have fundraisers all year long, one of them includes a cookbook full of recipes from the employees. This year the theme was cooking around the world and they held a contest for the cover art. This was my entry for the contest. I did not win, but it is always fun to participate in the contests.

Magnify
Miranda enjoyed the opera immensely, especially due to her magnifying glasses. Unfortunately, she was the only one who could see!

Another very late post for Illustration Friday this week. I'm starting to see a pattern here. I'm having tons of fun working on these posts; unfortunately, having a full time job gets in my way.

Wrapped
As badly as Medusa wanted to have a facial during her trips to the spa, she could never keep her "hair" wrapped in the towel and out of her way.

Modify
The Ugly Duckling did not want to wait to see if he would actually turn into a beautiful Swan, so he decided to "modify" his look.

Okay, so he's not really that ugly, but I did not want to miss out on IF this week, and I'm afraid I'll run out of time. I drew him during my flight to NYC Monday.

Idle

I did not have an idea or "idle" for quite awhile this week. Then the thought of a sloth came to mind, and I just had to sketch this little guy. This is also my first post of art created on my very own Axiotron Modbook. It's an awesome machine.

City Life

I guess if you had to live in a high rise, it would be great to have cute neighbors!

Worn

Little Red Riding Hood was surprised by the enjoyment the Big Bad Wolf displayed in the disguise he had worn!

Better late than never, I suppose. I whipped this illustration up today, and I'm not sure it's totally finished. The textures still need some work, but for the sake of sharing I decided to post it as is.

Happy 4th of July fellow Americans!

Unfold

This weeks word for Illustration Friday is "unfold." Instantly, this image came to life in my imagination, and it was fun to draw. I hope you enjoy guessing who all the characters are! A couple of them could fit into a number of stories. Who is the girl in the middle, she's probably me, wishing it was that easy to escape into a land magic and adventure.

Sketchbook

I've been playing around with this great brush pen from Japan. I love the texture it can get on watercolor paper. I actually drew the girl with the lollipop for Illustration Friday's word "crave", however I did not have access to my computer to post it that week.

Adapt
Nothing can hold this little night owl back from her true desire to be out in the daytime!

Hierarchy?

Or rather just equally diverse?

I almost ran out of time to participate this week. Better late than never!

Modbook

I'm drooling over these tablet computers! The base is a mac laptop that has been modified using wacom technology to create a tablet computer. It seems like the ideal sketchbook, just a mighty expensive one. I've been searching the net for reviews regarding the ability to see the screen in the sunlight and so far the modbook reviews are pretty disappointing on this factor. The modbook pro doesn't come out until June, and I'm wondering how it will perform in the sunlight. The only issue is that the pro is much too expensive, so it might not matter anyway.

But I really really want one of these!

Sisters

I've been sketching lots of children lately. I'm hoping to build up a new portfolio to send off to the children's publishing world. Finally! I've been out of art college for 8 years and have not pursued this dream of mine as of yet. I never realized how tough it could be to be a corporate artist, and how easy it would be to stop drawing for myself. This time, I'm vowing not to stop!

Reading

With spring time coming, I have the desire to be outside reading a good book. So many books, so little time!

Kids

Here is a fun little illustration based on a sketch that I drew at the park today. I'm trying to challenge myself to draw more kids and the stuff that kids do.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Welcome!

Welcome to Duke and Lola, my art blog!  I've named this blog after my grandma and grandpa because they encouraged me to pursue art for as long as I can remember.  So thank you grandma and grandpa for believing in me all these years.
